Training & Development 2018 and the Year Ahead

Successes for 2018

A busy year in the Training Department with Carlos Clark taking on Continued Professional Development for our Dentists & Hygienists and the Advisor role for FD training in April 2018.

Carlos has continued to build on the fantastic foundations laid by Kaushik Paul and Phil Loughnane in their times as CPD Tutor and FD Advisor respectively.

Joined by Tope Ademidun as Learning and Development Coordinator, Carlos and Tope have worked hard to further develop the core CPD offered to our dentists which includes:

Hands on Courses
• Minor Oral surgery
• Restorative dentistry
• Composite build ups
• Endodontics

Regular lecture based courses in:
• Perio and Ortho
• Core subject including:
•  Legal and ethical issues
•  Complaints
•  Oral cancer

New courses this year included seminars in:
• Tooth whitening
• Communication and effective delivery of NHS contracts.

Inductions

The department has revamped the induction programme for all Dentists and Therapists. Making the inductions more streamlined whilst also concentrating training in areas where our dentists have said they need the most support. This has led to an additional hands on module on SOE training for any dentist who has limited or no experience of working with our dental software programme.

External Providers

Carlos and Tope have worked hard to establish new partnerships and look after existing ones with leading external providers of CPD so we can offer our clinicians preferential rates on their training. Currently, these include:

• Restorative courses with Paul Tipton
• Communication training with Ashley Latter
• Short term Orthodontic alignment training and support from IAS Academy.

Other Discounts

The team has also secured discounts with GC for their external courses and Optident who provide dental Loupes.

Switch to booking online

One of the most important development this year has been the move to online booking for all our courses. Dentist are now able to book online through Eventbrite, leading to a much easier and simplified booking process.

FD Training

FD training continues to be a hugely important part of learning and development within Rodericks. We are very proud of the fact that we have 20 FD training practices currently (25% of the estate) and hope to add a further 2 training practices in 2019.
Carlos who has been involved in FD training since 1999 and was TPD on the Berkshire scheme oversees FD training now, looking after all the trainers and FD’s as FD advisor for Rodericks. A busy time recently for the department making sure all the new Educational supervisor applications were submitted on time in preparation for training for 2019 / 2020

The year ahead

Our dedicated web site. The department will be launching Rodericks own dedicated CPD website. Our clinicians will be able to view all our courses online and book directly from the new website. Tope has worked really hard with Paul Millar from our Marketing Team to be able to make this happen and we are delighted with the early prototype. Watch out for the final version in January 2019.

Therapist and Hygienist training

Carlos has worked with therapists within the organisation to produce a training programme for our Therapists and Hygienists which will be launched in May 2019. The programme will include:

• A hands on day covering amalgam and composite use.
• A lecture day covering core subjects around:
• Record keeping
• Legal and ethical issues
• Communication with patients and the team
• Oral medicine and oral cancer.

The department will also be providing additional hands on courses and are currently developing a hands on crown and bridge and veneer day which will look at preparations techniques in the morning (with hands on practice) and impression techniques (again with hands on practice) in the afternoon.

FD Training

Carlos will continue to support all our FD’s and trainers and has some excellent courses planned for our new trainers with Katy Newell Jones starting this off in January with our own dedicated Developing Educators course. The course is a huge stepping stone for anyone wishing to progress towards being an Educational supervisor for FD training but this year we are extending the offer to all our overseas dentist mentors and some of the team members in learning and development.

We look forward to meeting all our FD’s in January for their mid- year reviews and of course will be offering them our dedicated career day later in the year where a number of speakers from varying disciplines (hospital and practice) will provide career advice and interview training for our FD’s

We won’t be standing still and the team is very excited about the year ahead. Keep an eye out for all the updates through our emails and the clinical bulletins.
