Welcome to our FDs!

Rodericks FDs 2019

Carlos Clark, Associate Director for Professional Development at Rodericks, would like to welcome all new dental graduates who have joined Rodericks for their Foundation Dentist training year.

This is an exciting time of year in dentistry. For those fresh out of university, September marks the beginning of FD training. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all our FDs at Rodericks!

FD training induction

Here at Rodericks we offer a dedicated induction programme for our FDs. During this time, you will learn more about what to expect over the next year and highlight the areas of your clinical portfolio that you need to concentrate on, ensuring that you understand and meet all of your requirements throughout the year. We will also help you understand NHS rules and regulations, give patients all of the options for treatment, and generally support you in getting off to a good start.

But this will not be the end of the support you receive from us. Aside from your Educational Supervisor – who is highly skilled and ideally placed to help you on a day-to-day basis – there will be many other opportunities to seek guidance. For instance, we will provide training courses throughout the year to help develop your skills in minor oral surgery, hands-on endodontics, restorative dentistry, periodontology and orthodontics.

Further still, the mid-year review we offer FDs will help keep you on track for your Interim Review of Competency Progression. Also, a Careers Day will follow in March, when you can seek more bespoke information and advice about what to do next. For example, your options include Dental Core Training or remaining in general practice.

Finally, the FD training induction will detail the trip to Chicago for FDs which is increasingly popular for FD’s to attend. Rodericks provides an amazing opportunity for you to attend this conference and have your flight paid for, by writing up a full clinical case presentation that will be judged by a panel and presented to the winner.

Advice for FDs

My advice for all FDs would be to enjoy this year and have fun! Make sure you stay on top of things and prepare ahead wherever you can. In practice, it’s important to be punctual and professional. Focus on improving clinical skills and confidence in areas you find most challenging, such as oral surgery and endodontics. Also, look to enhance your communication and time management skills. We understand that the jump from university life to the professional environment can be challenging. But rest assured, we will provide all the support we can! So, if you need any help or advice ask your ES, Training Program Director, or otherwise you are welcome to ask me.

This is the time to set yourself up for a long and successful career in dentistry. Use this year to start finding out what fields you enjoy most. Always maintain the three ‘E’s – be ethical, effective and enthusiastic. As dentists, we should all strive to provide our patients with the dental care we would want our family to receive.

Good luck and welcome to dentistry at Rodericks!
